PICKERING: HOUSE PASSES HURRICANE VICTIM TAX RELIEF
September 22, 2005

Tax relief will reach individual hurricane victims, businesses in the hurricane zone and benefits those volunteering and giving to charities

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Wednesday, the House of Representatives unanimously passed the Katrina Emergency Tax Relief Act of 2005 to provide tax relief to individual hurricane victims, businesses in the hurricane zone, as well as volunteers and contributions to the hurricane relief efforts. President Bush is expected to sign the legislation soon.

"During this time of emergency, the government must remove burdens from those devastated by Hurricane Katrina. This tax relief provides flexibility and choices to victims while removing tax penalties. This legislation encourages businesses in the hurricane zone to maintain employees during their inoperation, extends IRS deadlines, and expands the scope of tax benefits to those whose past tax returns no longer reflect their current levels of distress," Pickering said. "This package also encourages charitable giving and volunteers from the private sector to help their neighbors and communities recover."
