JOHANNS APPLAUDS PRESIDENT BUSH'S TRADE CHALLENGE
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 14, 2005 - Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns applauded the vision President Bush outlined at today's United Nations General Assembly meeting, challenging nations to spur economic prosperity through increased trade opportunities.
"America's farmers and ranchers want the opportunity for fair trade. I applaud and support the President's challenge to other countries to eliminate tariffs and trade-distorting subsidies," said Johanns. "The Doha negotiations are the best chance we have for the world to improve market access and reform the use of subsidies. Providing greater opportunities to trade is the most effective way to help countries move along the path of development, increasing life expectancy, incomes and promoting democracy."
President Bush spoke this morning of the world community's efforts to help each other and called upon countries to utilize the on-going WTO Doha negotiations to foster economic growth in all nations by eliminating barriers to trade.
The President also expressed America's appreciation for the generosity of nations around the world in their response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. He applauded what we can accomplish together to raise the hopes and fulfill the dreams of those impacted by natural disasters and repeated our commitment to aid those nations struggling with poverty.
