Dr. Coburn Urges Prompt Action on Roberts Nomination
Honors Legacy of Late Chief Justice William Rehnquist
U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D., a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement today:
"With the nomination of Judge John Roberts to the position of Chief Justice it is now more critical than ever for the Senate to move quickly. Judge Roberts deserves a fair hearing and a fair up-or-down on the floor of Senate before the Court reconvenes on October 1," Dr. Coburn said.
"The passing of Chief Justice William Rehnquist is a sad moment for our nation and a great loss to the Supreme Court. Justice Rehnquist was man of great character and intellect. His sense of duty and commitment to the country and Court he loved was an inspiration to our entire nation.
"In an era when many on the Court drifted with public opinion, Justice Rehnquist had the courage to affirm our constitutional moorings. He loved the rule of law but not necessarily the rule of judges. He will be profoundly missed," Dr. Coburn said.
