DURBIN STATEMENT REGARDING HURRICANE KATRINA EMERGENCY RELIEF PLAN

Thursday, September 8, 2005

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today made the following statement regarding the Senate Democrats' Hurricane Katrina Emergency Relief Plan:

"A measure of a great nation is how it responds in a time of crisis."

"The American people have heeded the call to service with millions of dollars of donations and countless acts of kindness to those who have been devastated by Hurricane Katrina. It is now our responsibility in Congress to help those citizens begin to put their lives back together with immediate access to health care, housing, education and financial assistance."

"Today, our number one priority must be to provide immediate relief to our fellow Americans in crisis. But we still have a responsibility to understand why the initial response to this disaster was so inadequate. I strongly support an independent commission to investigate why our government was so unprepared and how we can prevent similar failures in the future."
