Governor Says Kansas Must Continue to Support Veterans

Sebelius appoints Col. Michael Neer to Commission on Veteran Affairs

Kansas owes a debt of gratitude to its veterans, says Governor Kathleen Sebelius, and we must continue to provide support to our military personnel during and after their service to the nation. She today announced the appointment of Col. (Ret) Michael M. Neer to the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs. He will serve a four-year term.

"Our servicemen and women put themselves in harms way to protect us. They have made the commitment to us; we must honor our commitment to them," Governor Sebelius said. "Col. Neer shares my priorities and will work to protect veterans and their families."

Col. Neer, Overland Park, currently serves as president of the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the Association of the United States Army in Kansas City. He helped to organize the chapter in 1999 and initially served as vice president for membership. Since 1999, he has established a fund to provide cash grants to wounded and severely injured service men and women, tripled the group's membership, and played a key role in bringing conferences and symposiums to Kansas City.

A member of the United States Army, Col. Neer attended the United States Army War College. He graduated from the University of Tampa with a bachelor's degree in economics and business management, and he received his master's degree in procurement management from Webster University.

The Commission works to advise, direct and assist veterans, their relatives and dependents through the coordination of state and federal programs and services in the fields of education, health vocational guidance and placement. Members also operate the Kansas Soldiers' Home, the Kansas Veterans' Home and the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery System.
