STATEMENT OF SENATOR TOM HARKIN (D-IA) ON THE AMERICAN BEVERAGE ASSOCIATION'S NEW POLICY ON THE SALE OF BEVERAGES IN SCHOOL VENDING MACHINES
"The American Beverage Association's announcement that they will limit sodas and soft drinks in American schools is a positive step forward. This new policy acknowledges what I have long believed--- that all sectors of society have a role to play in promoting sound nutrition and fighting obesity among American youth-- and I am very pleased that they have taken this action."
"While this is an improvement, it is only a start. While it provides some kids with a reduced number of soft drink selections during the school day, I believe these new policies do not go far enough, particularly at the middle school and high school levels. The proposal still allows middle-school children ready access to sweetened drinks with virtually no nutritional value. And high schools students will be unconstrained in their ability to drink unlimited amounts of soft drinks."
