Medicare - More Choices, Better Benefits
July 22, 2005

Weekly Column by Congressman Doc Hastings July 22, 2005 Medicare is marking its 40th year of helping seniors live longer, healthier lives. Over the past 40 years advances in medical technology have dramatically changed health care in the United States. For example, many illnesses that were once treated in the operating room are now prevented by prescription drugs. In 2003, a law was enacted to bring the Medicare program into the 21st century. The law modernizes Medicare - giving seniors more choices and better benefits.

Important improvements regarding preventative care have been made that every senior should be aware of. Within the first six months that they have Medicare Part B coverage, seniors are eligible for a "Welcome to Medicare" physical exam that includes a thorough review of a patient's health, preventative education and counseling on what they can do to stay healthy. Services like cholesterol and diabetes screenings, and chronic care management have also been added to the many preventative services that Medicare covers.

In addition to providing more preventative care the Medicare program is helping seniors with their prescription drug costs for the first time ever. Currently, seniors can choose to sign up for a Medicare approved drug discount card to help with the costs of the medicines they need.

Starting in January 2006, seniors will be able to participate in a voluntary prescription drug benefit with affordable premiums, low deductibles, and extra help for those who need it most. This benefit will expand health care options for seniors who want more choices - while preserving the traditional Medicare for seniors who prefer that.

Throughout the year, Medicare will provide seniors more information about Medicare prescription drug plan options. This fall Medicare will be sending seniors the "Medicare & You 2006" handbook with details on specific options - so that seniors can choose which plan is best for them. The handbook will also include instructions on how to join a prescription drug discount plan.

Seniors can begin enrolling in the prescription drug plan of their choice in November 15th - with drug coverage beginning on January 1st.
