Statement by Senator Jack Reed on the Appointment of John Bolton to be U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations
Monday, August 01, 2005
U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) stated, "I am disappointed by President Bush's announcement that he will appoint John Bolton to be U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations without the approval of the Congress.
"Mr. Bolton's publicly stated views and past actions indicate that he believes it is in the best interests of the security of the United States to act unilaterally, with little regard for cooperation with the international community. Our security, economic future and the war on terror require close coordination with nations throughout the world. Today, it is more important than ever that we use such tools as the United Nations and international law and treaties. I believe the United States Ambassador to the United Nations should be willing to work with other nations, and I think the evidence indicates that Mr. Bolton is not the best person for this job."
In 2001, Reed opposed Bolton 's nomination to be State Department's Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security.
