Include a Sunset Provision in Patriot Act

U.S. Representative Rahm Emanuel (IL) released the following statement following House reauthorization of the Patriot Act.

"The original version of the Patriot Act included a five-year sunset provision forcing Congress to review this essential legislation.

"Last night, when the House reauthorized the Patriot Act, we improved on the original bill but failed to include a sunset clause.

"I urge our Senators Durbin and Obama - and all of their colleagues - to include what the House did not include - a five year sunset on all provisions contained within the bill.

"We owe it to all Americans to be vigilant and strike the right balance between fighting terrorism and protecting the civil liberties of Americans."

Emanuel was a cosponsor of Congressman Bernie Sanders' Freedom to Read Protection Act of 2005 that would have reversed the provision allowing access to library and bookstore records.
