July 20, 2005
Hart cites Justice Roberts' long record of objectivity and sound judicial reasoning
Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Melissa Hart issued the following concerning President Bush's announcement that he has selected Justice John Roberts from the D.C. Circuit Court to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court left by the retirement of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
"Justice Roberts' dedication to impartially judge cases on their merits uniquely qualifies him to serve on the nation's highest court. His career on the bench demonstrates that he will faithfully interpret the law and ensure that the nation's most important legal matters are handled with the weight and conscientiousness they deserve."
"Justice Roberts' nomination represents an opportunity for bipartisanship, not divisiveness. Upon his nomination to the D.C. Circuit Court he was reported out of the Senate Judicial Committee by a vote of 16-3 and confirmed by the Senate unanimously. In that spirit, it is my sincere hope that the Senate quickly begins the confirmation process and avoids unnecessary partisanship or delay."
