Schumer & Maloney Announce West Point Elementary School Set to Receive More Than $48 Million to Bring the Base a Safe and Mordern Learning Facility

Today, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and Representative Sean Patrick Maloney announced that the Army has awarded a $48 million contract to fully renovate and expand the West Point Elementary School. The current school was constructed in 1963 and remains in violation of numerous federal education regulations. Dobco, Incorporated will execute this contract, which will fully replace the elementary school, and construct a safe and state of the art building for students and teachers. Construction is set to be completed by February, 2020. Schumer and Maloney applaud the Army's investment at West Point.

"This contract is great news for the West Point community, especially the children. For too long the condition of the base's Elementary School has deteriorated due to a lack of federal investment. These outdated facilities consistently fail to meet federal education regulations, and this does our children a great disservice. This new contract will allow for the school to be completely rebuilt bringing good paying construction jobs and giving the base and the school a facility it needs and deserves," said Senator Schumer. "When it comes to educating the next generation of leaders, we should not cut any corners."

"Every child deserves to get a good education -- and that starts with safe classrooms and buildings up to federal regulations," said Rep. Maloney. "This contract will pave the way for a brand new state-of-the-art facility for our students to learn and create good-paying construction jobs for folks in the Hudson Valley -- it's really a win-win."

Schumer said that replacing the elementary school with a new state-of-the-art facility would be a major step in providing a great education to the children of the surrounding area, many of which are children of military service members. The new school would meet the federal education regulations and provide a quality education for 500 students in grades Pre-K through 4th.

This contract is a continuation of Schumer's commitment to West Point Elementary School. In 2015 he secured as part of Senate appropriation bills $55 million dollars to rebuild West Point elementary school. The bill also included $70 million to replace the waste water treatment plant at West Point. The original plant suffered from leaking tanks that were beyond repair.
