STATEMENT OF REP. CLIFF STEARNS ON JUDGE ROBERTS

"I believe that President Bush has selected a very capable and distinguished jurist to replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the U.S. Supreme Court. I highlight the background of John Roberts, Jr.: Graduating summa cum laude from Harvard College and magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, clerking for then-Justice William Rehnquist, being Principal Deputy Solicitor General in the George H.W. Bush Administration, and now serving currently on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. His record reflects a career well within the mainstream of legal thought. I also point out that President Clinton's two Supreme Court nominees were approved in an average of 58 days, and I am hopeful that the Senate will confirm Judge Roberts before the Supreme Court resumes its duties on October 3rd."
