Pelosi, House Democrats Introduce AmeriSave, a Plan for Retirement Security
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi joined Congressmen Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Charles Rangel (D-NY), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Earl Pomeroy (D-ND), Ron Kind (D-WI), and Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) at a news conference this afternoon to unveil House Democrats' new retirement security plan, AmeriSave. Below are Pelosi's opening remarks and a fact sheet on AmeriSave:
"Today, House Democrats are proud to present AmeriSave, a plan for retirement security that embodies our commitment to middle-class families by providing them with the tools they need to achieve retirement security.
"Democrats are fighting to strengthen and safeguard Social Security's guaranteed benefit. In addition, more must be done so that every American has the opportunity to build a secure retirement.
"At a time when middle-class families are facing mounting health care costs, higher costs of tuition, and higher gas prices at the pump, savings for retirement is an even greater challenge.
"AmeriSave will help middle-class families build retirement security by expanding opportunities to save, and ensuring pension fairness, guaranteeing workers receive the benefits that they have been promised after a lifetime of hard work.
"Our plan will expand and improve existing investment accounts, such as 401(k)s and IRAs, so that American families can benefit from compound interest while retaining Social Security's guaranteed benefit, creating a comprehensive retirement strategy."
