Maloney Statement on House Passage of Oil Train & Hazardous Materials Safety Legislation

Statement

Date: Nov. 29, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives unanimously passed the Railroad Emergency Services Preparedness, Operational Needs, and Safety Evaluation (RESPONSE) Act. Rep. Maloney is an original cosponsor of the House version of the RESPONSE Act, which was introduced in March 2015:

"My neighbors in the Hudson Valley have seen firsthand the damage and destruction done by train derailments and other accidents. This legislation, which unanimously passed the House, will make sure our communities and first responders have the training and preparation necessary to handle potential oil train derailments and hazardous materials.

"As we continue to expand our domestic energy production, it's essential that we also modernize our safety procedures to ensure that communities of all sizes have the ability to effectively respond to potential accidents. Moving forward, I will continue to seek out opportunities to work alongside my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to keep our communities safe by making responsible investments in our infrastructure and our first responders."
