Menendez Statement on Cairo Bombing

Statement

Date: Dec. 11, 2016
Location: Newark, NJ

U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement in reaction to the bombing in Cairo, Egypt that targeted Coptic Christians, killing dozens and wounding dozens more:

"The targeted killing of women and children during morning Mass at Cairo's main St. Mark's Cathedral represents one of the deadliest attacks on Egypt's Christian minority and is beyond barbaric. The nations of the world must stand united in condemnation of this heartless and cowardly attack. These innocent victims of hate were murdered because of their Christian faith, but this attack was targeted at all people--Coptic, Egyptian, American, and all who reject extreme ideologies that have no basis in religious doctrine, but rather are rooted in hatred and ignorance.

"New Jersey is home to a vibrant and thriving Coptic community who are mourning this unspeakable tragedy and anxiously awaiting news from Egypt that loved ones are safe. During this time of sadness, my thoughts and prayers are with the Coptic community who deserve peace and tranquility, but will endure as they have throughout their noble history."
