DeLauro Statement on President-Elect Trump Nominating Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education

Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding news that President-elect Trump has nominated Betsy DeVos as Secretary of the Department of Education.

"President-elect Trump's decision to nominate Betsy DeVos as Secretary of the Department of Education is alarming.

"As the Department navigates several difficult issues, including full implementation of the bipartisan Every Student Succeeds Act, reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, ensuring affordable college for all, and continuing the critical work of the Office of Civil Rights to protect victims of campus sexual assault, experienced leadership and a strong commitment to public education is critical.

"I am deeply concerned that the selection of Betsy DeVos signals the incoming administration's intent to further erode support for public education in pursuit of a radical privatization agenda for our nation's public schools. America's students deserve better."

DeLauro is the Senior Democrat on the subcommittee responsible for funding the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education.
