On public lands across the country, energy companies are using a technique called hydraulic fracturing -- also known as fracking -- to extract valuable natural gas from the ground. But it's not just natural gas that escapes to the surface: the fracking process also releases toxic chemicals that can contaminate the air we breathe and the water we drink.
