This Makes Me Nervous

Statement

You know what makes me nervous?

Donald Trump nominating our next United States Supreme Court justice. His goal is to nominate someone "very much in the mold of Scalia."

Justice Scalia repeatedly argued against anti-discrimination laws. Arguing against affirmative action, Scalia said African Americans should choose "less advanced" and "slower track" schools, where classes aren't "too fast for them." He wanted to overturn Roe v. Wade, reverse marriage equality, and voted against protecting equal pay.

A nominee "like Scalia" would be dangerous -- especially for women, people of color, and LGBT Americans.

In less than a month, we're going to have a new president, a new Congress, and in short order, a new majority on the Supreme Court.

This could change the direction of our nation.

No matter what, I'll continue to stand up for our values in Congress. I won't stop fighting to protect civil rights, stop discrimination, and support economic prosperity for working families.
