Congressman Latta Hears From Army Corps Of Engineers About Luckey Cleanup Site

Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) heard from representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers yesterday who gave an update on the progress made toward clearing contaminated land in Luckey. The 40 acres of property, located at 21200 Luckey Road, was previously used for beryllium and magnesium processing. Last year, the Corps awarded a contract for remediation of the Luckey Site. On hand for the discussion were local officials from the Village of Luckey, Troy Township, and Wood County.

"A safe and effective cleanup of the contamination on this property will be helpful for future development of the location and ensure the safety of local residents," said Latta. "The first steps taken by the Army Corps of Engineers are promising, and I appreciate them sharing their progress with myself, local officials, and community stakeholders. This is a long-term commitment from the Corps to this important project for the area."

Last year, the Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $100 million contract for cleanup of contaminated soils at the Luckey site, and cleanup work is expected to commence sometime next year. In addition to the removal of soil, the representatives from the Corps also spoke about groundwater monitoring measures that they will be taking.

The site is the result of a magnesium processing facility that was constructed at the Luckey location in 1942. In 1949, the Atomic Energy Commission built a beryllium production facility at the location as well. The facilities were closed in 1959. In 2006, the Army Corps of Engineers signed a record of decision (ROD) regarding contamination in the soil on the site, and the Corps signed an ROD for contamination in groundwater below the site two years later.
