Murphy Statement on the Deadly Train Crash in Hoboken

Statement

Date: Sept. 29, 2016
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Transportation

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, released the following statement on the deadly train crash in Hoboken, New Jersey.

"This morning's crash is a horrific tragedy, and my thoughts are with the families of the victims, the survivors, and the first responders on the scene," said Murphy. "Commuters throughout Connecticut rely on trains just like this each and every day, and we need to make sure people feel safe. What we know is that every tragedy is preventable, and if safety mechanisms like positive train control could have stopped the train in its tracks, then Congress's continued foot dragging on rail investment is all the more outrageous. The Federal Railroad Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board must conduct an immediate, thorough investigation into the crash, and Congress has to do its job to protect all transit commuters."
