Cotton Statement on Report Indicating Citizenship Mistakenly Granted to 858-1,811 Individuals

U.S. Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) released the following statement today regarding a report released by the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General indicating that between 858 and 1,811 individuals-some of whom hailed from countries posing national security risks-may have been improperly granted U.S. citizenship despite being subject to deportation orders:

"This shocking report doesn't just reveal the Obama administration's lack of competence in enforcing our immigration laws. It reflects the President's failure to grasp how precious the privilege of U.S. citizenship is, that this privilege must only go to those immigrants who earn and deserve it, and that citizenship must be jealously guarded from those who would defraud and endanger our country. The president must act expeditiously to plug the holes that have allowed citizenship to be granted to those who are ineligible, investigate each and every case of mistaken naturalization, and protect this country from those individuals who present a national security risk. And he must begin to get serious about treating U.S. citizenship as the high privilege it is."
