Statement

Date: Sept. 30, 2016
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Environment

Dr. Charles Boustany (R-Lafayette) issued the following statement after signing a letter with 86 of his House colleagues insisting that the United States maintain its current role in internet domain system functions.

Boustany said: "Countries like North Korea, Russia, and China are known for censoring the internet for their citizens. Why in the world would we trust them with management of internet domains? I'm proud to join my colleagues in sending a strong message to the Obama Administration that we won't support the internet giveaway."

On Saturday, October 1st, The U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has a contract to transfer Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions to a nonprofit group of international stakeholders called the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The House letter to Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker urges immediate action to ensure IANA is not transferred to ICANN and remains under the authority of NTIA.
