Cardin Says BRAC Recommendations Key To War On Terrorism And Strengthening National Security

TOWSON, MD - U.S. Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin today urged members of the Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) to move forward with the relocation of thousands of national security jobs to Maryland.

"The bombings in London yesterday highlight the need to put our resources into combating terrorism. Maryland is ready and prepared to meet the national security challenges that face our nation in the 21st Century," said Rep. Cardin.

On May 13, the BRAC released its list of recommendations, which included relocating more than 9,000 new jobs to Maryland. The Congressman has said that the Ft. Meade and the Aberdeen Proving Ground areas -- where many of the new jobs would be located -- have the resources and ability to meet the needs of a large influx of new workers. "Maryland has a highly educated and motivated workforce, we have top-notch schools, and affordable housing. We also have important national security facilities already located in our state. It makes sense to relocate a significant number of military and intelligence jobs to Maryland," he said.

The Congressman also stressed, "The BRAC recommendations are aimed at ensuring that our military and intelligence communities are able to meet the new, evolving terrorist threat that we face. Our state has facilities and resources to meet that challenge."

The Congressman is working with the Maryland delegation to ensure that the BRAC recommendations are implemented.
