Van Hollen, Hoyer Visit Southern Maryland as Part of Summer Tour

Press Release

Date: Aug. 31, 2016
Location: Kensington, MD

Today Chris Van Hollen and Congressman Steny Hoyer visited Charles and St. Mary's Counties as part of Van Hollen's summer tour. He is visiting all 24 jurisdictions in the state to talk to voters about ways to boost local economies, expand workforce training, and support our veterans and seniors.

Van Hollen and Hoyer spoke with the Charles County Chamber of Commerce's Military Alliance Council about the importance of Naval Support Facility Indian Head to our local economy and national security. They also met with community leaders in St. Mary's County about their priorities in Congress and toured the University of Maryland's Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Test Site, which offers researchers, students, and government officials access to UAS research in order to safely and responsibly advance unmanned aircraft systems.

"It was great to be in Southern Maryland today meeting with business and community leaders who are working every day to build up their communities. Families here and across the state want leaders who will work together to get things done -- from stronger schools to better paying jobs to protecting our nation,"said Chris Van Hollen. "Those aren't partisan issues, they are issues that speak to America's strength and future. I will work every day with great leaders like Congressman Hoyer to move Maryland forward."

"Supporting Maryland's military facilities and the business communities outside their gates has always been a top priority of mine in Congress," said Congressman Hoyer. "I was pleased to meet with Chris Van Hollen and community leaders in Charles and St. Mary's Counties today to discuss how we can work together to continue to strengthen these facilities, which are critical to our economy and national security. We also toured the University of Maryland's Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Test Site, which just celebrated its two-year anniversary. I was proud to play a role in winning the UAS test site designation from the FAA, and I will continue to work with Chris, our colleagues in the Maryland delegation, and local officials to ensure Southern Maryland remains one of the world's premier centers of UAS research and development. I know Chris will be a strong advocate for families and businesses in Southern Maryland and throughout our state, and I thank him for visiting Charles and St. Mary's Counties today."

Building on his neighborhood-based grassroots primary campaign, Van Hollen is keeping his focus on expanding opportunities for the middle class. His proven track record of getting results and his vision for the future stands in stark contrast to the GOP's agenda, which fails to invest in our families and our future.
