Issues: Judicial Branch

This session, both chambers passed legislation changing the judicial selection process in Kansas. The people of Kansas will now have a greater voice in the process of judicial selection and our third branch of government will now be more inclusive and transparent. The nomination power for appellate court judges has been moved from a commission built by a select group of lawyers to the Governor. The nominee would then be subject to confirmation by the Kansas Senate. This will ensure accountability in the third branch, which has been left largely untouched by any representation. Following the federal model, Senate confirmation allows constituents to have the ultimate say in who represents them in the judicial branch. This legislation brings the process out of a private room and into the public light.
