ENSIGN REACTS TO DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION REPORT

Senator John Ensign made this statement following the release of the 2004 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Long-Term Trends in Academic Progress, a 30-year assessment of reading and math skills:

"The results of this long-ranging report card show us that great progress has been made in the last several years as a result of the accountability of the No Child Left Behind legislation. Especially significant strides have been made by minority students—evening the playing field for all our children. While there is still a great deal of work to do in improving public school education in the United States, this report shows we are definitely moving in the right direction."
