Press Release

Date: July 26, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Bill Shuster (R-Hollidaysburg) announced on Tuesday that Patton Fire Company #1 has been awarded a Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) in the amount of $23,000. The funds will be used to acquire new washing and drying equipment for the firefighters gear.

"The grant funding allows our firefighters to purchase the necessary equipment to stay safe and do their job," said Congressman Shuster. "This is great news for Patton Fire Company #1, and I stand ready to continue assisting them or any other first responders in our district as they perform lifesaving work for our communities."

"Patton Fire Company #1 would like to thank Congressman Bill Shuster for his assistance in acquiring an Assistance to Firefighters Grant," said Jerry Brant of Patton Fire Company #1. "We would also like to thank the Congressman for his continued support of this extremely vital program for our first responders. We will use the grant funds to purchase a commercial grade washer, dual purpose dryer, and gear racks."

According to the Patton Fire Company #1 a major step in preventing firefighters from acquiring long-term illnesses due to the chemicals and materials in residential structure fires and vehicle fires is equipment to properly wash and dry protective equipment firefighters wear while fighting fires. This funding allows for the department to purchase the critical equipment that they would not be able to afford without this grant.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program helps meet the needs of firefighters, emergency responders, and emergency medical organizations. Funds provided by the AFG program are used to purchase supplies, including new vehicles, protective gear, staff training, and other resources that local departments need to protect the public.
