Issue Position: Cracking Down on Crime

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2016

In September 2014, my colleague (someone whom I had worked with in FBLA and DECA in Superior High School from 2010-2012), Garth Velin (age 20), was gunned down at his Superior, Wisconsin home by five thugs. The main killer, Chance Andrews, had over fifty run-ins with the law, including assaulting a tow truck driver, threatening to kill three Middle School Girls, and leading police on a chase through Superior, Wisconsin[5]. Nevertheless, because of a plea bargaining system, Chance Andrews only received twenty years for murder. Meanwhile, the parents of Garth received a life sentence for having to deal with the death of their child day-in-and-day-out.

Once elected to State House, I will introduce legislation that will end plea bargains for serious-and-heinous crimes. Those who commit murder will not hide under a reduced sentence but will instead have to take responsibility for their actions.
