U.S. Rep. Cartwright Announces $50,000 DHS Grant Awarded to Goodwill Fire Company No. 1

Press Release

Date: July 7, 2016
Location: Pottsville, PA

Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has awarded the Goodwill Fire Company No. 1 with an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG). The funds will be distributed via the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The Company has been awarded a $50,000 Operations and Safety grant, which will enable the purchase of twenty complete sets of turnout gear, or personal protective clothing. The equipment is used to protect firefighters during a fire.

"Our firefighters serve with honor and dignity, providing our communities with the necessary services to enhance the safety of its residents and business owners," said Rep. Cartwright, a member of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus. "This is a competitive grant process, and I am pleased that DHS recognized the merit of the Goodwill Fire Company's work."

The purpose of the AFG is to award competitive grants directly to fire departments to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of first-responder personnel. Since 2001, the AFG program has provided approximately $6.1 billion in grants to first-responder organizations to obtain much-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles, and training.

The AFG Program will award approximately $306 million in competitive grants to fire departments, non-affiliated EMS organizations, and state fire training academies during FY 2016.
