Congressman Baird Announces Upper White Salmon Protection Passes House
June 27, 2005

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Brian Baird today announced that legislation he introduced to include a portion of the White Salmon River in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System (NWSRS) has passed the House.

"The upper White Salmon is one of Washington's true natural treasures," said Congressman Baird. "I am thrilled Congress has recognized the Upper White Salmon's value and voted to preserve its unique and irreplaceable resources."

Congressman Baird's legislation creates wild and scenic river protection for 20 miles of the Upper White Salmon River and its tributary, Cascade Creek, within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Designation will preserve the river's free-flowing nature as well as the natural values and rural lifestyle of the surrounding areas. The bill has broad public support within the local community and throughout the region, including the support of the U.S. Forest Service.

"The Upper White Salmon's beauty and abundance should be preserved for future generations to enjoy. This wild and scenic river designation will allow fishing enthusiasts, hikers, river rafters, paddlers, and sightseers to enjoy a pristine river setting," Congressman Baird said. "The designation will also benefit the local hospitality industry and area businesses."

Congressman Tom Udall (D-NM) joined other lawmakers in praising Congressman Baird's bill and conservation efforts on the House floor before the bill's passage. Congressman Udall called Congressman Baird a "strong leader" and "one of our nation's strong conservationists."

Located in south-central Washington, the White Salmon River is known for its exhilarating white water rapids, stunning scenery, geologic value, and abundant fish and wildlife. An eight mile section of the Lower White Salmon River won federal protection in 1986 when Congress passed the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Act. Senator Maria Cantwell's companion legislation is on the Senate legislative calendar and awaiting a vote.
