Grayson Applauds Democratic Colleagues' Response to Orlando Terror Attacks

Statement

Date: June 17, 2016
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Guns

"In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in American history, and the worst terror attack on U.S. soil since 9/11, I applaud my Democratic colleagues who are responding with commonsense legislation focused on saving the lives of American citizens."

"My colleague, Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), introduced legislation that closes a loophole preventing law enforcement notification of terror suspects featured on FBI watch lists. The Nelson bill will ensure that any individual who is, or has been, investigated for possible ties to terrorism is entered into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, which gun shop owners use to run background checks on prospective gun buyers. This is a critical and commonsense reform that could have prevented Sunday's massacre in Orlando, Fla."

"The FBI interviewed the gunman responsible for Sunday's massacre three times prior to the shooting. Despite past concerns about the shooter's possible ties to terrorism, he was able to walk into a gun store in Port St. Lucie, Fla., and legally purchase two firearms--including an AR-15-style assault rifle--which he then used in to kill 49 people, and injure 53 others."

"Also, my Democratic colleagues in the Senate have engaged in a filibuster, where they seek legislation that will close a terror loophole for gun purchases, implement universal background checks, and prohibit those on the federal government's no-fly list from purchasing firearms."

"Lastly, in the coming week, I will co-sponsor the Freedom from Fear Act with my colleague Rep. Corrine Brown (D-FL05), a one-sentence bill that will reinstate the 1994 ban on all semiautomatic weapons. These commonsense reforms will save lives. My Democratic colleagues have answered the call of leadership."
