Whitfield Votes to Prevent Abuse by the IRS

U.S. Representative Ed Whitfield (KY-01) today voted in favor of H.R. 5053, Preventing IRS Abuse and Protecting Free Speech Act. The bill limits the information a tax-exempt organization must report about its donors on its annual information return. It applies to the schedule B form, which is not needed for taxpayer administration. Whitfield released the following statement upon passage:

"There is growing concern among Americans about the personal information being collected by the IRS and how that information is being used. With the revelations in 2013 of the IRS targeting conservative groups for political purposes, it is important we ensure donor privacy is respected and that the IRS is held accountable for serving the taxpayers. This bill will reduce unnecessary documentation that the IRS has already indicated is not required to perform their duties. Since the IRS has failed in proving their ability to safeguard confidential information in the past, we should not be providing them any more sensitive information than they absolutely need."
