Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp announced two federal grants totaling over $2.4 million to support rural North Dakota hospitals and aid with cancer prevention and awareness efforts.

"North Dakota faces unique health care challenges in our rural communities and our cities," said Heitkamp. "Making sure our small and rural hospitals have access to the resources they need so North Dakotans enjoy a high quality of life, including through prevention and awareness of illnesses, will help enable our communities to grow and thrive. These federal funds will help make that possible by supporting our small town hospitals and providing North Dakota the tools its needs to increase public awareness about cancer."

The North Dakota State Department of Health will receive $2,098,536 in federal funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Cancer Prevention and Control Programs for State, Territorial and Tribal program. These funds will be used to collect and share information about cancer to provide the appropriate public awareness and education.

The University of North Dakota will receive $321,463 in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Small Rural Hospital Improvement Grant Program (SHIP). These funds are used to help small rural hospitals -- those with 49 beds or less -- to purchase needed equipment and provide quality training.
