House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a Joint Meeting of Congress:

"I was honored to join in welcoming Prime Minister Modi to the U.S. Capitol today for his address to a joint meeting of Congress, as well as to serve as a member of the escort committee greeting him on behalf of the House and Senate. America, the first modern democracy, and India, the world's largest democracy, have a historic responsibility to work together in defense of freedom and opportunity for both our nations and for people across the globe. The partnership our nations forge and strengthen will be critical to shaping the course of the twenty-first century. Together, we have an opportunity to build closer economic ties based on joint technology R&D and pursue new economic opportunities that help Americans and Indians prosper. Together, we can also make the world safer by working to prevent nuclear proliferation, to help stabilize Afghanistan, to enhance security cooperation to deter common threats, and to address climate change.

"Our nations are bound by more than common interests -- we are connected by the strong ties so many Indian Americans have to the country of their ancestors as well as by the values our nations share. I look forward to continuing the work of advancing the U.S.-India relationship in Congress, and I appreciated very much the Prime Minister's remarks about how our two nations can work together to address our common challenges."
