Norcross Legislation Honoring Fallen South Jersey War Hero Clears Final Legislative Hurdle

Press Release

Deptford, New Jersey-U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01) today announced legislation he authored & introduced in Congress to rename the Deptford, New Jersey Post Office in honor of Army 1st Lt. Salvatore Corma, II has cleared its final legislative hurdle. The bill now heads to the President's desk.

Salvatore Corma, II of Deptford, a 2008 West Point graduate, was killed in action in Afghanistan on April 29, 2010 by an improvised explosive device (IED). Corma warned his fellow soldiers to retreat after discovering the IED. His actions are credited with saving the lives of as many as 19 fellow service members.

"As we head into this Memorial Day weekend, this is a fitting tribute to the memory of a young man who sacrificed everything for the safety of his fellow soldiers and our national security. I'm pleased this legislation is now heading to the President's desk so that it can be signed into law and the Deptford Post Office will be renamed as a lasting honor to Sal's legacy," said Rep. Norcross.

"Salvatore's favorite expression was Carpe Diem (Latin for "seize the day). He cared so much for the service members under his command and accomplishing the mission at hand. I'm honored that Salvatore's memory has been given this special honor," said Corma's mother, Trudy.

Salvatore Corma, II was an Army as First Lieutenant of the Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The legislation had the full support of New Jersey's entire Congressional delegation.
