Pelosi Statement on May Jobs Report

Statement

Date: June 3, 2016
Location: San Francisco, CA

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 38,000 jobs in May, and the unemployment rate fell to 4.7 percent. With businesses adding 25,000 jobs last month, May represents the 75th consecutive month of private sector job growth.

"May's jobs report is a sharp reminder of the need for Congress to take strong action to create more good-paying jobs and raise the wages of hard-working American families. Our economy cannot afford more of House Republicans' relentless and reckless special interest obstruction.

"Republicans have chosen to block critical action to create more good-paying jobs, to raise wages, and to address the public health emergencies in our country. Even after the collapse of their job-killing Ryan "Road to Ruin' budget proposal this month, Republicans have doubled down on their destructive agenda of obstruction. Republicans have failed to meaningfully address the Zika crisis, blocked vital new resources for the opioid epidemic, and refused to lift a finger for the thousands of lead-poisoned children in Flint.

"For yet another month, House Republicans tried to stack the deck for the special interests, while utterly ignoring the priorities of the American people. Democrats will continue to amplify the voices of hard-working families calling on Republicans to "Do Your Job' and join us to raise wages, create jobs and build an economy that works for everyone."
