Congressman Ruben Hinojosa Announces $1.4 Million in Incremental Funding to Texas Workers Affected by 2015 Storms

Press Release

Congressman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) announced that Texas areas affected by the severe summer 2015 storms, including Hidalgo County, will receive $1.4 million in incremental funding for clean-up and recovery efforts by the U.S. Department of Labor.

"I am pleased that the U.S. Department of Labor approved a National Dislocated Workers Grant in the amount of $1.4 million of incremental funding, and a total of $2.1 million awarded to date, for the Texas Workforce Commission to provide clean up and recovery relief for those eligible individuals from the May/June 2015 summer storms, including in Hidalgo County, to receive the support they need. This grant will provide much needed help for the dislocated workers to acquire a job and provide for themselves and their families."

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, a National Dislocated Worker Grant (NDWG) award in the amount of $718,356 was released initially on August 26, 2015 to create temporary jobs for eligible individuals to assist with clean-up and recovery efforts after severe storms in Texas in May and June 2015. With this incremental award, the Texas Workforce Commission will receive $1,436,712 to continue this recovery effort, bringing the total funds awarded to date for this project to $2,155,068.

Supported by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (link is external) of 2014, NDWGs temporarily expand the service capacity of dislocated worker training and employment programs at the state and local levels by providing funding assistance in response to large, unexpected economic events which cause significant job losses.
