Sanford Votes for Bill to Provide Funding Against Zika Virus

Statement

Date: May 19, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Representative Mark Sanford issued the following statement after yesterday's passage of H.R. 5243, the Zika Response Appropriations Act:

"This plan is a good first step to stem the spread of Zika by providing more funding immediately for mosquito control and to research a vaccine. The $622 million appropriated by this bill is on top of the $589 million that was transferred from the Ebola fund earlier this year to fight the virus.

"Given the potential here for a public health emergency, I think Congress should step in with a quick and proportional response to the threat posed. In that vein, though the offsets in this bill weren't perfect, the legislation seemed like a commonsense and financially responsible reaction to the issues, and accordingly, I voted for the bill."
