Rangel: ITC Report Confirms Benefits Of Lifting Embargo

Statement

Date: April 19, 2016
Location: New York, NY

Congressman Charles B. Rangel, who represents the 13th Congressional District of New York that includes Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, released the following statement after the United States International Trade Commission published a study highlighting the benefits of restoring economic relations with Cuba:

"I am pleased that the recent report by the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) reaffirms the need to lift the embargo and start trading with Cuba. Since 1993, when I first introduced my Free Trade with Cuba Act, I have long advocated to allow trade, travel and other goods into Cuba which will do more than just open markets and ports. Trade will enable the exchange of American culture and ideals that can help foster democratic principles in Cuba. I urge my colleagues in Congress to help President Barack Obama's efforts to fully normalize our ties with Cuba and end our country's outdated and economically inefficient policies that have not benefited the American or Cuban people.

According to the 2016 ITC report, the effect of lifting trade restrictions on Cuba would increase U.S. exports of agricultural and manufactured goods to about $2.2 billion. The boost to tourism by lifting travel restrictions would also significantly increase Cuban demand for agricultural and commercial products and allow for the purchase of more American goods. I am proud to have continuously introduced bills such as the Export Freedom to Cuba Act (H.R. 634), which lifts the travel restrictions between the United States and Cuba, and the Promoting American Agricultural and Medical Exports to Cuba Act (H.R. 635), which would remove the sanctions that are restricting agricultural and medical trade.

On my recent historical trip to Cuba with President Obama, I felt the excitement of the Cuban people towards our renewed friendship and the infinite possibilities for growth in our economies. As we seek to build upon the progress President Obama has made, now is the time for Congress to cement diplomatic and economic ties with the island nation. At a time when Americans are looking for new economic opportunities, we need to look to the future and think about ways our relations with Cuba can benefit Americans and Cubans alike."
