DeLauro Statement On House Republicans' Attack On Medical Research

Statement

Date: March 25, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding news that House Republicans plan to issue 17 subpoenas on fetal tissue research as part of their attacks on Planned Parenthood.

"House Republicans' latest plan to issue subpoenas on fetal tissue research is another attack on Planned Parenthood at the expense of research on the public health threats facing Americans.

"Rather than continuing a witch hunt against Planned Parenthood, House Republicans should address some of the most critical issues facing our country today. Not only do they refuse to support funding to fight public health threats like the Zika virus, opioid abuse epidemic, and Flint water crisis, they are actively setting us back years by attacking the very research we need to save lives.

"These attacks are setting a dangerous precedent in biomedical research by creating a culture of fear and intimidation in the scientific community. It is unconscionable that we would make it more difficult for researchers to do lifesaving work. Enough is enough. House Republicans continue to play a dangerous game with the health of Americans and they need to drop these senseless attacks."
