Congressman Garamendi Endorsed by California Teachers

Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, Yuba City, Davis, CA), the proud father of two public school teachers, has received the endorsement of the California Teachers Association.

"We stand with Congressman Garamendi, because he supports public schools and the teaching profession," said CTA President Eric Heins. "Garamendi believes every student deserves a quality education, and that educators must have the resources and respect they need to build better futures for our communities."

"I'm honored to have the endorsement of the California Teachers Association and the thousands of teachers it represents. They share my commitment to fully fund our public schools, promote career education partnerships with businesses and labor apprenticeship programs, and support afterschool programs," Congressman Garamendi said. "All six of my children graduated from public schools, and all my grandchildren old enough are in public schools today. This is an issue that is near to my heart."

"I helped build classrooms as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ethiopia, and I taught children in those classrooms. I saw children with innate intelligence and a thirst for learning who were held back due to circumstances out of their control," he added. "Throughout my public service career, I've focused on helping our public schools succeed, and that starts with teachers who are respected and who have sufficient resources in their classroom."

As a state legislator, Garamendi founded enrichment programs for students interested in pursuing careers in arts and science. As a UC Regent and CSU Trustee, he encouraged closer partnerships between high schools and colleges and voted against every undergraduate tuition increase. Since entering Congress, he's hosted a series of events in the district to encourage young women interested in a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to stick with their dreams. He's also a leading voice in Congress against school bullying, imploring influential leaders to remember that "the children are listening."
