Press Release

Earlier today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released three final rules to reduce methane pollution. These standards aim at reducing millions of metric tons of methane emissions and smog-forming volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from new, modified, and reconstructed sources in the oil and gas industry.

Ranking Member Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) offered the following statement on the rules:

"I am pleased that the Administration has finalized new methane rules. Methane is about 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a heat-trapping gas, and it contributes to the formation of ozone. Reducing the amount of methane emitted into the atmosphere is vitally important for combating climate change and protecting public health. It is important to protect Americans from the effects of these pollutants, and I look forward to seeing the results of the implementation of the new standards as an important first step in reducing methane emissions. I am also pleased that the Administration has announced plans to take action in the coming months on reducing emissions from existing sources of methane pollution."
