Rep. Loretta Sanchez Honors Women's History Month On House Floor

Statement

Date: March 17, 2016
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Women

Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46), founder and chair of the Women in the Military Caucus, spoke on the House floor to honor Women's History Month earlier this week.

Rep. Sanchez's remarks as prepared for delivery are below:

"Mr. Speaker, I rise today to commemorate Women's History Month.

"As one of the 108 women serving in Congress today, I'm thankful to follow the trail blazed by American women who demanded the right to vote and participate in our democracy.

"I am inspired by recent historic milestones, such as the first ever women graduating from the Army's elite Ranger school and the DOD finally expanding all combat roles to qualified service women.

"These achievements are further proof that women can break any barriers if they are able, willing, and given the support and opportunities.

"Unfortunately, today's widespread social and economic inequalities disproportionately hurt American women.

"In 2016 a typical woman in America only earns 79 cents on the dollar, loses over $400,000 in wages during her lifetime, and risks losing her job if she needs to care for her children or sick family members.

"So as we take this month to thank America's women pioneers for their vision and courage, let us also resolve to empower American women with the support and protections they need to succeed.

"Thank you and I yield back my time."
