Statement by Rep. Ted Deutch on Signing of Florida Holocaust Memorial Bill

Statement

Date: April 18, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Florida Governor Rick Scott signed into law a bill establishing a Holocaust memorial within the Florida Capitol Complex. Congressman Ted Deutch (D-FL), a member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, released the following statement:

"It's a true honor to represent so many Holocaust survivors, and it has been a gift to be able to meet with them and hear their stories. But as this generation ages, it is crucial that we not allow their memory to fade, nor should we allow future generations to grow up without understanding this dark part of world history.

"Florida has always been a leader and a model for other states for our Holocaust commemoration efforts, with five memorials and museums and a statewide law mandating Holocaust education. I congratulate Florida Representative Jared Moskowitz and State Senator Eleanor Sobel for garnering overwhelming support for this bill that paves the way for this important memorial in our state's capital. This memorial will serve to educate visitors of the unimaginable atrocities committed during the Holocaust, as well as a constant reminder for lawmakers of their vital responsibility to never permit such atrocities to occur again."
