DeSantis Introduces 28th Amendment Requiring Members of Congress to Abide by the Laws they Pass

Rep. Ron DeSantis (FL-06) today introduced a constitutional amendment prohibiting Congress from passing laws respecting the citizens of the United States that does not also apply to members of Congress. This important amendment will ensure that Members of Congress live within the parameters they establish for the American people. DeSantis is joined in this effort by lead co-sponsor Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ-05).

"Passing laws that apply to the American people but that exempt Congress is inconsistent with the ideals of a republican form of government," DeSantis said. "Those who serve in Washington should be part of a service culture, not part of a ruling class that lives under its own set of rules. Enacting this proposed 28th amendment will reduce the disconnect between Washington, D.C. and the American people and lead to better policymaking."

"Americans know full well that Congress refuses to hold itself accountable. They saw what Congress tried to do when it forced Obamacare on the public while attempting to exempt itself. This must end," said Salmon. "This very necessary amendment would ensure that Congress always lives under the same rules as Main Street, and that no American need fear a law that doesn't apply equally to their representatives in Washington."
