Rep. Corrine Brown Thrilled with Decision to Place Harriet Tubman on $20 Bill

Press Release

Date: April 21, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Brown made the following statement:

"As the representative of Florida's 5th congressional district, I am most thrilled with the efforts of the U.S. Department of Treasury and its Secretary Jacob J. Lew as they have announced Wednesday, April 20th, the decision to place Harriet Tubman, abolitionist and former slave on the $20 bill. Harriet Tubman, most famous for her role in helping slaves escape through the Underground Railroad, will now replace the nation's seventh President, Andrew Jackson, on the front of the $20 bill. The historical decision by the U.S. Department of Treasury to place Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill is a commemoration of Tubman's fearless legacy, leading hundreds of slaves to freedom in the United States.

With the Women's Suffrage centennial in 2020, the move to place Harriett Tubman on the twenty dollar bill is most appropriate. Harriett Tubman will be the first woman to be placed on currency in the United States in over 100 years. Beyond a doubt, Harriet Tubman and her legacy are most worthy of this decision. I would like to thank the U.S. Department of Treasury and Secretary Jacob J. Lew on recognizing the tremendous efforts of a great humanitarian, abolitionist, civil rights activist, and American hero!"
