Mikulski Praises Senate Vote to Protect GMO Labeling and Consumers' Right to Know What Is in Their Food

U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.) today issued the following statement on her vote to protect the labeling of consumer food products containing Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). The Senate voted 48-49 on Wednesday to block a measure that would have banned states from requiring GMO labeling.

"I'm on the side of consumers and ensuring we protect their right to know what is in their food. I have heard from thousands of Marylanders and people across the country who want to know what is in the food they are feeding their kids and families. I firmly agree.

"We need to develop a consistent national standard with a consumer-friendly solution for companies to disclose their ingredients in a way that makes sense for their products. Having 50 different state laws mandating labeling in varying formats is confusing for consumers and unworkable for companies that do business across state lines and international borders.

"I support a sensible center. Consumers deserve the information they need without drastically increasing the cost of food for Americans. I also believe we need regulation without strangulation so we don't crush food manufacturers with cumbersome and impractical solutions."
