Kildee Secures Funding for Mott Community College Programs in Defense Bill
Representative Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced that $4 million covering two separate projects has been appropriated for Mott Community College in the Defense Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2006, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives June 20. The House-passed bill will provide $3 million for the Rapid Product Development and Deployment Portal Project and $1 million in funding for the Intelligent Orthopedic Fracture Implant System (IOFIS) program. Funding for these projects was added to the House bill at the request of Representative Kildee. The House-passed bill now awaits Senate action before it can be signed into law by the President.
"I am very pleased that we were able to secure this funding and that Mott Community College will play an important role in the development of these programs," said Rep. Kildee. "The research conducted right here at Mott will make our military men and women safer in the field, will enable them to recover more quickly, and it will ultimately make our citizens safer here at home."
The Rapid Product and Development Portal project will create a web-accessible repository that captures advanced and emerging technology resources and puts them within easy reach of Defense Department personnel and their contractors. These tools will improve flexibility and reduce the time required to produce the necessary parts and systems that support the rapidly changing needs of the armed forces. The project will leverage an existing data repository framework developed by Mott's Workforce Development Institute for Simulation Technologies, expanding it from its current Automotive sector to a Tank-Automotive database.
The IOFIS will be capable of monitoring and/or reacting to the healing process to deliver bone growth-promoting drugs on a specific schedule or in response to sensing of a fracture site. It will be developed using technological developments in materials- and micro-sciences to help minimize disfiguration, reduce rehabilitation times and improve the long term quality of life for our soldiers. Research and system development for IOFIS will be jointly undertaken by Mott Community College, Kettering University in Flint, Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI, and Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, TX. The fracture repair system IOFIS uses will reduce patient immobility time and could be applicable to other bone fracture injuries with similar healing concerns.
