Cantor Statement on Sen. Dick Durbin's Comparison of U.S. Soldiers to Nazis
June 17, 2005

Washington, D.C. - Chief Deputy Majority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) released the following statement today regarding Sen. Dick Durbin's (D-IL) comments in which he compared U.S. troops to Nazis:

"Sen. Durbin's remarks were inappropriate and over the top," Cantor said. "His statement trivializes the lives lost during the Holocaust. I'm outraged that a member of the Senate Democrat leadership could so flippantly compare U.S. soldiers who fight for freedom to Adolf Hitler's murderous thugs.

"Sen. Durbin must apologize for these irresponsible remarks, which so far he has refused to do."

On the Senate floor on Tuesday, June 14, Durbin read an email from an FBI agent alleging mistreatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay , Cuba by U.S. troops. After reading the email, Durbin said "you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime - Pol Pot or others - that had no concern for human beings."
