Hoyer Statement on House Republicans' Failure to Pass a Budget

Statement

Date: April 15, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Republicans failed to pass a budget resolution by the April 15 statutory deadline:

"With their failure to bring a budget resolution to the Floor and pass it by today's statutory deadline, House Republicans have once again demonstrated the degree to which the sharp divisions within their conference are impeding Congress's ability to work for the American people. America's workers and businesses deserve a governing Majority that is willing to show through its budget how it proposes to invest in economic growth, public health and safety, and our national defense. They deserve the certainty that comes from having a Congress that works and that can be relied upon to pass those measures necessary for the regular functioning of our government.

"Democrats and Republicans had agreed on topline budget numbers late last year as part of the bipartisan agreement to raise the debt limit and lift the sequester. It is shameful that so many House Republicans are insisting that their leaders renege on that agreement and go back on their word to Democrats and to the American people by refusing to accept those topline funding levels in their budget resolution. This is certainly not the first time that the most extreme wing of the House Republican Conference has obstructed Congress's work, while our constituents and the business community that are looking to Congress to provide them with certainty have to endure the consequences.

"Rather than continuing to appease their most extreme faction, I urge Republicans to stick to their word and follow the bipartisan agreement in the budget and appropriations process for this coming year. There is still a chance to work together to ensure that we are investing in measures that encourage growth, promote opportunity for all Americans, and keep the American people safe."
